Puppy Grooming: When Should You Start?

Puppy grooming begins long before the first full haircut. Brief, positive handling at home lays the groundwork while your veterinarian guides when shared-space visits are safe.

Practise the tiny things

Touch paws, lift ears and brush for a few seconds at a time. Stop before your puppy becomes frustrated and reward calm behaviour.

Make the first visit easy

The goal of an introductory groom is familiarity鈥攏ot a perfect style. Short sessions help puppies meet sounds, surfaces and tools without overload.

Ask about timing

Vaccination and health advice should come from your veterinarian. Once visits are appropriate, regular gentle exposure is usually easier than waiting until the coat is tangled.

Keep the care personal.

General guidance is a starting point. A qualified veterinarian should assess medical concerns and anything unusual or persistent.
