How Often Should You Groom Your Dog?

There is no single grooming calendar that suits every dog. The useful answer starts with coat type, lifestyle, comfort and what you can maintain between appointments.

Start with the coat, not the calendar

Short, smooth coats may need less cutting, but they still benefit from bathing, nail care and regular brushing. Double coats need careful de-shedding, especially during seasonal changes. Curly and continuously growing coats usually need more frequent professional attention to prevent matting.

A groomer should look at coat condition and explain a realistic routine rather than hand you a universal rule.

Watch the everyday signs

Book sooner when brushing no longer moves easily through the coat, nails click on the floor, hair is covering the eyes, or your dog feels greasy or uncomfortable. Persistent scratching, redness, odour or sudden coat changes deserve veterinary attention rather than cosmetic cover-up.

A useful starting rhythm

Many dogs with growing or high-maintenance coats visit every four to eight weeks. Dogs with lower-maintenance coats may need professional visits less often, supported by home brushing, bathing and nail care.

Puppies benefit from short, gentle introductions early in life, once your veterinarian says it is safe for them to visit shared environments.

Make the plan sustainable

The best grooming schedule is one you can keep. Ask for a simple home routine: which brush to use, how often, and what areas tend to knot first. Small, calm sessions at home usually work better than an occasional wrestling match.

Keep the care personal.

General guidance is a starting point. A qualified veterinarian should assess medical concerns and anything unusual or persistent.
